Common causes of boat damage

Whatever the size or type of boat you own, damage is an almost unavoidable risk. There are plenty of hazards every boat has to face at some point, from rough seas, wind and rain, other boat owners, and the odd mistake. Even the most experienced sailors are not immune to the occasional bit of damage befalling their boats.

There are, however, steps you can take to both prevent and mitigate this damage. The first thing is to take out insurance to cover any future costs for boat repairs, whether major or minor. Once you have this base covered, it is time to turn your attention to some of the more common issues and damages that boats often encounter.

Your boat rubbing up against the dock you moor it to, other boats and yachts or random piling is a common issue faced by boat owners. This can cause basic cosmetic damage, such as scratches, but it can also lead to structural damage in other areas of your boat.

Structural damage to your boat's hull can lead to water damage in your electrical wiring or other wooden fixtures, which will be far more expensive to fix.

Depending on the type of boat you own and the boatyard you keep it in, a wide range of devices can keep your boat free from dock rash. These include bumpers or fenders, as well as other external devices, like mooring whips. Each of these is a simple and cost-effective method of protecting your boat when it is moored up.

Around 30% of boating insurance claims involve a boat striking a submerged object. Lower waters or recent bad weather can lead to more hazardous objects entering the water, from sandbars to broken pieces of a dock to even other sunken boats.

The level of damage these objects do varies depending on their size and the speed at which your boat is going. If the hull is breached, water damage and sinking are significant possibilities.

The best way to avoid these hazards is by sailing warily, taking note of the water around you and any potential objects lurking below the surface. This is especially important in rivers, near construction work, ports, or areas that have recently experienced bad weather.

Keeping your radio tuned in for alerts from other sailors and boat owners will also help. If you strike a submerged object, immediately check your hull and engine for leaks, oil spills or smoke. Slowly make your way back to your mooring and have the boat inspected before you go out in it again.

Storms, high winds and snow all pose a threat to boats. Most marinas or docks will have a storm plan in place to protect the vessels moored there.

They can also offer you advice on how to best moor your boat to prevent it from being damaged. If you live a distance away from a dock or marina or rarely use your boat, storing it ashore is the best thing you can do. Having a reinforced, strong and dry area to store your boat is the best way to look after it when not using it.

Collisions with docks, buoys or other boats cause the most serious damage to boats. Correcting your course as soon as possible is best if you find yourself drifting towards one of these hazards. Staying within prescribed speed limits and being vigilant about other boat owners around you will also help you stay out of trouble.
